A look at the legend itself
We're talking about Arrack, baby! This signature liquor is made from coconut flowers and has a flavour that's totally unique. Locals and visitors alike love to sip on it and share it with friends over a delicious meal.
Bartenders around the world are getting super creative with this spirit and making all kinds of crazy cocktails. Think classics like the Arrack Sour and Jungle Bird, but with a modern twist.
How is it made?
Did you know that Sri Lanka is the largest producer of coconut arrack in the world? Yep, and up until 1992, the government had a big hand in its production. The manufacturing process is pretty unique too. It all starts with the sap of unopened flowers from a coconut palm tree. Toddy tappers climb the trees every morning to collect the sap, which ferments into a mildly alcoholic drink called "toddy".
But the real magic happens during the distillation process. There are different methods involved, including pot stills and continuous stills, resulting in a final distillate with an alcohol content of 60 to 90%. It's then diluted to between 33% and 50% alcohol by volume, or 66 to 100 proof. And get this, some arrack is matured for up to 15 years for maximum flavour and fragrance.
So next time you're in Sri Lanka, be sure to try some arrack and experience its unique blend of whiskey and rum flavours. And don't forget to raise a glass to those talented toddy tappers who make it all possible!
Let's take you on a wild ride through the W15 Collection's signature cocktails that are crafted with the fiery spirit of Arrack at their core.
This signature drink is the perfect combination of Sri Lanka's finest Arrack, zesty lime juice, and fragrant nutmeg, all infused with the subtle sweetness of hibiscus tea. But what really sets this cocktail apart is the addition of a muddled betel leaf, adding a touch of local flavour and a burst of freshness to each sip.
The Ceylon Botanix is not only a delicious drink but also a tribute to the beautiful flora and fauna of the island. Each element of the cocktail is carefully selected to showcase the unique flavours and ingredients of this tropical paradise.
So why settle for a boring old cocktail when you can experience the tastes of Sri Lanka in every sip of the Ceylon Botanix?
This cocktail is a perfect blend of old Arrack, pineapple purée, lime juice and a dash of home-made celery bitters, creating a truly unique taste. It's a refreshingly tropical drink with just the right amount of tanginess and sweetness.
The Weligama Remedy is like an orchestra in a glass - each ingredient coming together to create a harmonious symphony of flavours. The sweet and fruity notes of the pineapple purée balance perfectly with the tartness of the lime juice, and the subtle hint of celery bitters adds a layer of depth to the drink. And let's not forget the star of the show - the old Arrack, which gives this cocktail a distinct Sri Lankan touch.
