On Sunday, the 26th of February, 2023, the Aliya Hippie market made its fourth appearance at W15 Weligama on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. The renowned gathering of vendors from across the island collaborated with the beachfront boutique hotel and beach to create a buzzing marketplace that drew in locals and tourists alike. The contemporary design and open space that calls W15 Weligama home, provided the perfect backdrop for the bustling market.

The lush green garden of the hotel offered ample space not only for the market but also for visitors to take a break or have a safe space while enjoying the ocean and the waves. Meanwhile, the pool provided a quick-cool-off option whenever needed. The modern, minimal design of W15 Weligama perfectly complemented the evening, and the garden leading to the beach was scattered with people taking in the sun, kids playing games, and shoppers perusing through the market.

From around 11.00 a.m, W15 Weligama’s restaurant and bar were in full steam, with a range of cocktails and food on offer for the weary shoppers. Surfers and beach-goers alike were drawn to the colours that erupted from the market, and the mesmerizing acoustic session by local artists kept the ambience alive.

The market played host to a variety of vendors, ranging from local fashion designers, clothing brands, jewellery, and other crafts, alongside some awesome artists who had their work on display. The marketplace also hosted some fun activities within its space such as tattoo artists, tarot card readings, and face painting. A multitude of people was present at the event, with both locals and tourists rolling in throughout the day.

The event was not just about shopping but was also an opportunity for vendors to get their names out there.

“I love being a part of this marketplace because it provides a great platform for me to show my products and connect with potential customers.” said one of the vendors who believe that such events have allowed many small business and self-employed individuals to get traction when it comes to building demand for their products.

As the sun started to set, the event was still buzzing, and while the marketplace continued to draw a crowd, visitors and vendors enjoyed brick-oven pizzas and tantalizing cocktails. Throughout the day, some of Sri Lanka’s renowned artists and international performers took the stage as the excitement unfolded.
